History of Wanaka
Wanaka is situated in Otago Province where the climate is relatively warm and certainly dry. It is consequently a wine region. Many of the NZ wines we have seen on menus are from here. Otago province has had mixed fortunes since it was settled by Europeans in the 1850's. The area has hosted gold rushes, timber mills, and agriculture. It is now very much a holiday destination - summer water activities and trekking as well as winter sports such as skiing. Tourism really started when Theodore Russell built the first hotel in 1867.

Our next outing was to the National Transport and Toy Museum.
